Saving & preserving value with Bitcoin: what’s realistic
Preserving purchasing power with Bitcoin? Which money it may suit, what historical savings plans show and why emergency funds and fixed-date goals don’t belong in it.
In short~40 sec
- 01Bitcoin is unsuitable for your emergency fund and savings goals with a fixed date. At most, it’s an option for money you won’t need for many years.
- 02Preserving value is a question of time frame: in 2022 euro area inflation peaked – and in the same year the Bitcoin price fell by around 64% (in US dollars).
- 03Monthly savings plans since 2013 have so far always been in profit after four years or more, but along the way some were around 50% down. That is not a forecast.
- 04Nobody knows the cheapest day to buy in advance, but the costs are known. What also matters is an amount you’ll keep paying even in a crash.
Good to read firstGoal first
Bitcoin is often promoted as a piggy bank that protects against inflation. The price data paints a mixed picture: over many years, Bitcoin has so far mostly ended well up, but in between the price swung so hard that it doesn’t suit most savings purposes. What matters is what you’re saving for and for how long.
Three pots: what you’re saving for
‘Saving’ covers three different jobs:
- Emergency fund: a reserve for the broken washing machine or a spell without income. It must be available at any time and stable in value. How big it should be is covered in Financial foundations first.
- Savings goals with a date: a car, a deposit, a trip. The amount has to be there for certain on the day.
- Long-term wealth: money you won’t need for many years and that is meant to offset the loss of purchasing power.
Bitcoin is only an option for the third pot. According to Germany’s financial regulator BaFin, you can’t have return, security and availability all at once: favour one and you usually give up something on another. BaFin also advises against putting everything into a single asset.[1] The first two pots need security and availability; in the third, return may count – if you can cope with the swings.
Purchasing power: what you’re saving against
The European Central Bank aims for 2% inflation over the medium term.[2] Even that rate halves purchasing power in about 35 years (own calculation). In reality, consumer prices in Germany rose by 21.9% from 2020 to 2025, so purchasing power fell by around 18% in five years.[3] How inflation comes about is explained in Money, inflation & trust.
The case for Bitcoin: the supply is strictly limited, and nobody can decide to create more units (see Digital scarcity). The case against is the price history: in October 2022, euro area inflationGlossaryInflationA general rise in prices that makes money lose purchasing power. The ECB aims for 2% a year over the medium term for the euro area.On the learning path: Stage 2 · Step 1 – Money, inflation & trust →In the glossary → peaked at 10.6%[4] – and in the same year the Bitcoin price fell by around 64% (in US dollars, end of 2021 to end of 2022).[5]

Your price stays the same. How we make money →18+ · Crypto assets are highly volatile; you could lose all your money. No deposit protection. show how much duration matters. For every start month since May 2013, we evaluated a savings plan of $100 a month after a fixed term – bought at the monthly closing price, excluding fees and taxes (own calculation, data up to August 2026):[5]
| Term of the savings plan | Start months that ended in profit | Weakest result |
|---|---|---|
| 1 year | 70% | −50% (start 07/2021) |
| 2 years | 77% | −48% (start 01/2021) |
| 3 years | 95% | −13% (start 01/2020) |
| 4 years | 100% | +31% (start 01/2019) |
| 5 years | 100% | +39% (start 07/2021) |
The longer the savings plan ran, the less often it ended at a loss. Three caveats belong with that:
- Thin data: around 13 years with only a few big cycles, and the time windows overlap heavily.
- Survivorship: in hindsight, an asset that still exists looks better than the many that failed.
- Smaller gains: from the start of 2014 to 27 September 2026, the price rose by around 45% a year on average; in the last five years, by only around 15% a year.[5]
So far, a long horizon has reduced the risk of loss; it can’t rule it out. The price is currently $86,292; the DCA calculator works with current data and your own start months. How to plan for staying the course is described in Holding for the long term.
Coping with volatility
The end values hide what happens in between – and that is where a savings plan succeeds or fails. An example: a savings plan of $50 a month from January 2018 had paid in $5,200 in total by August 2026 (own calculation, excluding fees):[5]
- −44%
- lowest paper value
- January 2019
- 14 months
- in the red in total
- last in March 2020
- ≈ $25,400
- value at end of August 2026
- on $5,200 paid in
Anyone who sold at the low made the paper loss permanent. Anyone who kept saving bought more at low prices.
What helps you cope with the volatilityGlossaryVolatilityA measure of how strongly a price fluctuates, usually given as annualised standard deviation in per cent. Bitcoin fluctuates much more than a broad stock index or gold – up and down.On the learning path: Stage 3 · Step 3 – Returns & risk →In the glossary →:
- Automate: a running savings plan takes the question of the ‘right moment’ off your hands.
- Look less often: checking the price every day doesn’t change the plan. A fixed date once a quarter is enough.
- Decide in advance what happens at −50%: write down when you’ll pause (for example, if you’ve had to dip into your emergency fund) and when you won’t (for example, ‘because the price is falling’).
- Think in sats: the number of your satoshis grows with every purchase, even when their value falls – in the community this is called stacking satsGlossaryStack satsCommunity slang for regularly accumulating small amounts of bitcoin, counted in satoshis (sats) – usually via a savings plan and regardless of the price. 1 BTC is 100 million sats.On the learning path: Stage 4 · Step 4 – Setting up a savings plan →In the glossary →. Your bills are still paid in your own currency.
Typical thinking traps are covered in Psychology & discipline.
Setting up the savings plan
The set-up is explained step by step in Setting up a Bitcoin savings plan. For preserving value, four points count:
- Amount: one you would keep paying even after a 50% fall.
- Costs: in five-year periods since 2014, the day of the month you bought on shifted the amount bought by up to around 4% compared with the average of all days; which day came out ahead changed from period to period (own calculation).[5] Fees and the spreadGlossarySpread (bid-ask spread)The difference between the buy and sell price. With many apps, the spread is the real fee – it just doesn’t appear as a separate item on your statement. On the learning path: Stage 4 · Step 2 – Choosing a provider →In the glossary →, by contrast, cost money on every purchase, for certain.
- Custody: once the sum is large enough that losing it would hurt, it’s worth withdrawing to your own wallet – bundled rather than after every purchase. See Understanding custody.
- Records and tax: in Germany, each purchase has its own holding period. Under current law, gains are tax-free if more than one year passes between purchase and sale.[6] A draft bill from the Federal Ministry of Finance would tax gains on purchases made after 31 December 2026 regardless of how long you hold them.[7] It has not been passed (as of 28 September 2026).[8] The reform tracker has the latest; other countries have their own rules (see Bitcoin tax around Europe). Frequently asked questions
Can Bitcoin replace my instant-access savings account?
No. Instant-access savings should be available at any time and stable in value. Bitcoin isn’t stable: the price can fall by more than half within a few months. Your emergency fund and money for fixed dates belong in an account without price swings.
Does Bitcoin protect against inflation?
Not in the short term: in 2022, when euro area inflation peaked at 10.6%, the Bitcoin price fell by around 64% (in US dollars). Over many years, Bitcoin has so far mostly been well up – that is no guarantee for the future.
Should I stop my savings plan in a crash?
That’s your call – ideally decided in advance and in writing. Good reasons to pause are an emergency fund you’ve had to dip into or a large expense. A falling price on its own isn’t one: those who kept saving through slumps bought at lower prices.
How much should I save in Bitcoin each month?
We can’t say, because we don’t know your finances. A good test: would you keep paying exactly this amount if your holdings were 50% down? If not, it’s too high.
