Our take
What is Nunchuk?
Nunchuk is a software walletGlossarySoftware walletA wallet in the form of an app on a smartphone or computer. It stores your keys on a device with internet access – convenient and usually without a purchase price, but more vulnerable than a hardware wallet. Good for smaller amounts and for practising. On the learning path: Stage 5 · Step 2 – Setting up your first wallet →In the glossary → for multisigGlossaryMultisig (multi-signature)A wallet in which several keys jointly control the bitcoin – for example 2 of 3. If one key is lost or stolen, the bitcoin stays safe. In return, setting it up and backing it up is considerably more demanding. On the learning path: Stage 6 · Step 4 – Inheritance & emergency plan →In the glossary → and inheritance planning, on the market since 2020 [5]. It is made by Nunchuk Inc, which has a globally distributed team [2]. The desktop app, Android app and core library are open source under GPL-3.0 [4].
With multisig, a payment needs several keys, for example 2 of 3 hardware wallets. One stolen device is then not enough to take your bitcoin, and one lost device does not mean losing it. How this works is explained in Multisig simply explained. Costs (as of September 2026)
| Plan | Price per year | What you get | Your own hardware wallets |
|---|---|---|---|
| No subscription | $0 | Do-it-yourself single-sig and multisig, community support | as needed |
| Iron Hand | $120 | one assisted 2-of-3 multisig | 2 |
| Honey Badger | $480 | two assisted 2-of-4 multisigs, inheritance planning | 3 |
| Honey Badger Premier | $2,100 | three 3-of-5 multisigs, several people with roles, inheritance planning | 4 |
You buy the hardware wallets separately. Nunchuk does not require an identity check on any plan [3].
Security and custody
Without a subscription, you hold all the keys. On the subscription plans, Nunchuk co-holds one key – one of three with Iron Hand [3]. Nunchuk cannot spend anything with it on its own. If you lose one of your two keys with Iron Hand, the other one together with Nunchuk’s key is enough.
For inheritance, Nunchuk offers, among other options, a time lock directly on the blockchain (timelockGlossaryTimelockA condition under which bitcoin may only be spent from a certain block height or point in time, or after a waiting period. Timelocks are a building block for Lightning and for inheritance and emergency setups. On the learning path: Stage 6 · Step 4 – Inheritance & emergency plan →In the glossary →). It is designed to work even if Nunchuk no longer exists [1],[3]. This requires all the hardware wallets involved to support Miniscript, a notation for such spending conditions [3]. What you should arrange regardless of the provider is covered in Inheritance & emergency plan.
What to watch out for
- Complexity: more devices and more backups mean more places where something can go wrong. Multisig is usually too much for your first steps; it makes sense for larger amounts or when you want to plan your succession.
- Back up the configuration: besides the seed phrases, you also need the wallet configuration to recover – without it, even enough keys are useless (Multisig simply explained).
- Test first: practise recovery with a small amount before you move larger sums – see Testing recovery.
