Our take
Models and prices (as of September 2026)
Jade is a hardware walletGlossaryHardware walletA small dedicated device that keeps your private keys offline and signs transactions internally. The key never leaves the device, so malware on your computer can’t get at it.On the learning path: Stage 6 · Step 1 – Hardware wallets compared →In the glossary → from Blockstream. Its firmware supports Bitcoin and the Liquid Network, a Bitcoin sidechain.[1]
- Jade Core, $99: no camera, connects via USB-C or Bluetooth.[1]
- Jade Plus, $149 (plastic) or $169 (metal): adds a camera for QR codes, plus SD card or USB stick support.[2],[3]
- Jade Classic, currently $67 instead of $79: the older model with a camera, still sold in the shop but without the genuine check (see below).[4],[8]
Blockstream ships one to two business days after purchase. The buyer pays any import duties, so they come on top of the dollar price.[5] There are no ongoing costs.
Using it
With the camera (Jade Plus and Classic) you sign transactions by QR code without connecting the device to a computer or phone – this is called an air gapGlossaryAir gapAn air-gapped signing device has no cable or wireless connection to other devices. Transactions travel back and forth by QR code or memory card – so the private key stays completely offline. On the learning path: Stage 6 · Step 1 – Hardware wallets compared →In the glossary →.[2] Jade works with the Blockstream AppProvider · Software walletBlockstream AppFormerly Blockstream Green: open-source wallet for smartphone and desktop, with Jade support, Liquid and Lightning (beta).Non-custodial software – no financial licence required · reviewed Sept 2026Price: no purchase price; network fee when sending (as of Sept 2026)On the learning path: Stage 5 · Step 2 – Setting up your first wallet →Our profile →Official website ↗, and also with BlueWalletProvider · Software walletBlueWalletOpen-source wallet with no purchase price for iPhone, Android and Mac – Bitcoin only, with multisig, watch-only and hardware wallet support.Non-custodial software – no financial licence required · reviewed Sept 2026Price: no purchase price; network fee when sending (as of Sept 2026)On the learning path: Stage 5 · Step 2 – Setting up your first wallet →Our profile →Official website ↗, SparrowProvider · Software walletSparrow WalletBitcoin desktop wallet with no purchase price and full transparency: coin control, PSBT, multisig and support for most hardware wallets.Non-custodial software – no financial licence required · reviewed Sept 2026Price: no purchase price (donations welcome); network fee when sending (as of Sept 2026)On the learning path: Stage 5 · Step 2 – Setting up your first wallet →Our profile →Official website ↗ or Electrum.[4]
In the Blockstream App, a paired Jade is added as a watch-only wallet by default: you see your balance and can receive without connecting the device. You only need it to send.[6]
Security: blind oracle instead of a secure element
Jade has no secure elementGlossarySecure element (security chip)A chip specially hardened against physical attacks, like the ones in bank cards and passports. In many hardware wallets it protects the PIN and secrets if the device falls into the wrong hands. On the learning path: Stage 6 · Step 1 – Hardware wallets compared →In the glossary →; Blockstream calls its approach a ‘virtual secure element’.[1] Your wallet can only be decrypted with two parts: the PIN you enter on the device and a secret held on a server, the blind oracle. The server never sees your PIN. After three wrong PIN attempts, device and server delete their parts; from then on, only your seed phraseGlossarySeed phrase (recovery phrase)A sequence of usually 12 or 24 words from which your wallet derives all its private keys. Anyone who knows the words has full access to your bitcoin – so they belong in an offline backup and never in anyone else’s hands. On the learning path: Stage 5 · Step 3 – Backing up your seed phrase →In the glossary → gets you to your funds.[7]
- By default, Jade uses Blockstream’s server; you can also run your own.[7]
- If the server cannot be reached, you enter the seed phrase directly (via SeedQR or by hand). It also restores your wallet in any other compatible wallet.[7] So the seed phrase is your real backup: Backing up your seed phrase.
You check whether your device is genuine during setup in the Blockstream App (‘Genuine Check’); with other apps, you use Blockstream’s web app. The Jade Classic does not offer this check.[8]
In December 2025, Blockstream reported that certain older firmware was possibly vulnerable if Jade was paired with a malicious third-party app. No affected users were known; Blockstream urged users to install firmware 1.0.38 from an official source.[9] So only install updates via the Blockstream App or Blockstream’s official pages.
