Assumptions, formulas and limits – click to expand

A satoshi (sat) is the smallest unit of bitcoin: 1 sat = 0.00000001 BTC, so one bitcoin has 100 million sats.[1]Bitcoin Core counts only whole sats internally; amounts above 21 million BTC are invalid.[2]

  • Dollars → sats: amount ÷ price × 100,000,000, rounded to whole sats.
  • Sats → dollars: sats ÷ 100,000,000 × price.
  • BTC → dollars: BTC × price (rounded to whole sats).
  • Price: live, in US dollars. Your browser only asks our server; it fetches the price from mempool.space and falls back to Bitstamp, Kraken and Coinbase if that fails.[3]If no source is reachable, we use the last known price and say so. Under “Adjust” you can enter your provider’s price instead.

Right now $1 buys you about 1,159 sats – before fees. The fee calculator shows what is left after spread and fees.

Why dollars? The bitcoin price is usually quoted in US dollars worldwide. If you pay in another currency, your provider’s price differs by the exchange rate and its markup.

The Lightning Network often counts in thousandths of a sat (millisatoshis); on the blockchain itself only whole sats exist.[1]
