Our take

What is Cryptosteel?

Cryptosteel makes GlossaryMetal backupA backup of your seed phrase on steel or titanium – punched, engraved or made with letter tiles. Unlike paper, it survives fire and water. Independent tests show that simple stainless steel plates are robust and often the cheapest. On the learning path: Stage 5 · Step 3 – Backing up your seed phrase →In the glossary → for your GlossarySeed phrase (recovery phrase)A sequence of usually 12 or 24 words from which your wallet derives all its private keys. Anyone who knows the words has full access to your bitcoin – so they belong in an offline backup and never in anyone else’s hands. On the learning path: Stage 5 · Step 3 – Backing up your seed phrase →In the glossary →: instead of writing the words down, you slot stainless steel letter tiles into a holder.[2] The company behind it is SWORD Ltd from Manchester; the products are made in Poland.[1],[4] How to back up your seed phrase as a whole is explained in Backing up your seed phrase.

Models and prices (as of September 2026)

  • Cassette Solo: a flat cassette for 96 characters. That is enough for 24 words, because in a GlossaryBIP 39 (standard for seed words)The widely used standard that turns random data into 12 to 24 words from a fixed list of 2,048 words. Your wallet calculates all its keys from these words – BIP 39 is behind most seed phrases. On the learning path: Stage 5 · Step 3 – Backing up your seed phrase →In the glossary → seed phrase the first four letters identify each word uniquely. Seals included, $149 (or €149).[2]
  • Capsule and Seed24: tiles on a rod inside a steel cylinder. Seed24 builds on the Capsule, holds 128 characters and can be closed with a serial-numbered seal. The Seed24 Security Kit costs $50 instead of $80 on promotion.[3]

Prices change often because of promotions. Cryptosteel ships worldwide except to Russia and accepts bitcoin, among other payment methods.[4] Orders to the EU are sent from an EU warehouse without customs duties.[3] Elsewhere, customs duties and import charges may apply depending on your country.[4]

The crushed Capsule could no longer be unscrewed; the tiles could only be recovered by cutting it open.[7] The Cassette lost individual tiles in the heat test and almost all of them after crushing.[6] Lopp has not tested Seed24. Many steel plates into which you punch dots or letters get an A in every test there – Blockplate, for example.[5]

What to watch out for

  • Check every word against your notes after inserting it, before you close the device.
  • Close it with the seal. If the seal is damaged, someone has opened it.[2],[3]
  • Metal protects against fire and water, not against theft: keep the backup safe and out of sight.
